Digital Transformation of the Mangrove Ecosystem Product Supply Chain: Opportunities and Challenges for the Muisne Canton, Esmeraldas, Ecuador
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article is an academic output of the research project “Biophysical Structure, Business Management, and Economic Valuation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, Muisne Canton–Esmeraldas–Ecuador,” funded by the Vice-Rectorate for Research, Outreach, and Postgraduate Studies of the Technical University “Luis Vargas Torres” of Esmeraldas. The commercialization of products associated with mangrove ecosystems is an important economic activity for coastal communities because of its relationship with income generation, local employment, and household livelihoods. However, limitations in commercial information, coordination among stakeholders, market access, and organizational capacity may restrict the ability of harvesters and producers to participate under favorable conditions in the value chain. This article analyzes the opportunities and challenges of digital transformation in the commercialization chain of mangrove products, focusing on Muisne canton, Esmeraldas province, Ecuador. A qualitative, descriptive, and analytical bibliographic and documentary review was conducted using scientific literature, institutional documents, and technical guidance related to value chains, small-scale fisheries marketing, and information technology management. The analysis organized digitalization opportunities around stakeholder and product registration, information exchange on prices and buyers, commercial coordination, traceability, and capacity building. Challenges associated with connectivity, digital skills, stakeholder organization, trust, and the financial sustainability of technological solutions were also identified. A conceptual model of digital transformation adapted to the local context is proposed, although its relevance must be assessed in subsequent research. Digitalization may strengthen the commercial chain when combined with community organization, training, product quality, and mangrove ecosystem conservation.
