Abstract

Collective memory is an essential component in shaping cultural identity and urban development. This study analyzes how architecture materializes collective memories, articulating tradition, innovation, and cultural sustainability in different contexts: Ecuador and South Korea. Despite their differences, the two cases coincide in the idea that architecture is an active type of memory, a space between the local and the global, between the past and the future. A comparative, qualitative, and bibliographical approach is employed, complemented by the analysis of emblematic cases such as the Gyeongbokgung Palace, the Hanok, and vernacular architecture in Manabí. Findings show that memory preservation is not incompatible with technological innovation; on the contrary, when integrated critically, it strengthens social cohesion, identity, and urban resilience. Research highlights the need for comprehensive policies, citizen participation, and critical regionalism strategies to address the challenges of globalization, promoting sustainable and culturally relevant urban development.
